As you all know I like to analyse things and I'm fascinated by just how and why these game playing channels work.
He is particularly enamoured by one channel that plays Minecraft all day, features four or five young people and a language that will be totally unintelligible to anyone over the age of about thirty.
But there is much more to this than meets the eye. The more viewers the channel gets, the more advertising they can attract and the more money they can make and the more merchandise they can sell.
I feel I have missed out. Imagine the possibility of 30 years ago recording our family playing Monopoly or Cluedo and posting it on television. We could have bored a nation.
But back to Minecraft. I have tried to play it and couldn't understand anything that was going on.
I looked this channel up on the Internet and the youngsters are from one family. Each day they go off to work which consists of playing games. They have hired a warehouse for this purpose. One of them is responsible for the technical side, another for marketing, another edits the video footage and another deals with the finance and there's a lot of finance.
There's so much finance. The family have made so much money that their parents have been able to retire from the restaurant business. They have made so much money that they will never have to do a proper job, even if the games bubble bursts as it undoubtedly will. That's probably the point at which they will need counselling as they are forced back into the real world, whatever that may be.
So there's much more to this than meets the eye. It's big business with a capital B. I don't pretend to understand all this and am not sure I want to but it's part of our modern world and a part that most of us will never be a part of.
As I wrote this, Elliot told me about a game he has been playing.
"You punch people and lift weights which makes you stronger and more powerful, " I was told. I didn't enquire any further on that one.
I think I need to develop my own world and inhabit it - oh yes I already have in the shape of this blog. Unfortunately it's not going to make me a millionaire. A fiver would do me.
Those of you that have visited or know Southend, what do you think of the place? Tomorrow I will tell you about our visit on Sunday. edit.
