Here I would like to promote a number of links that will give you more information on Hethersett and some of my activities and the web sites that I either own or manage (usually both). This is followed by my Facebook pages.
Hethersett Herald and Hethersett Village Web Site
Towards the end of 2016 I decided to bring a dream of mine to reality in producing a monthly e-magazine about the village of Hethersett. It was something I had been thinking of doing for sometime but I wanted to be sure I could sustain it once it was launched. The first edition in November 2016 ran to 12 pages. Today the publication is regularly over 130 pages and includes news, comment and features. Originally I had a separate Hethersett village website which is no longer in existence. I am developing the Hethersett Herald website to include village news and information, along with a new history project looking at the village from the Stone Age to the present day.
Family Website
As with the Hethersett website, there was originally a separate site for my family. Again this is no longer in existence and I am working to incorporate many of the original files on that site into this one.
Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association
Hethersett and the Meltons Sports Association began life in February 2011 as an attempt to bring together clubs and people interested in sport, fitness, health, well being and the environment. Over the past decade it has supported success in the Norfolk Village Games, setting up new sports clubs and obtaining a grant of over £3,800 from South Norfolk Council. This site includes agendas, minutes and archive news. The association is still in existence and meets quarterly.
Hethersett - A Village at War
This web site was set-up to commemorate 100 years since the start of the First World War. Initially it was designed to cover the years of that war and was supported by Hethersett Parish Council. I then decided to extend it to cover the Second World War and the years between 1910 and 1950. It includes a number of exclusive documents and letters, never before published. It also gives biographies of all those from the village who gave their lives in the service of their country along with details about the village war memorial.
Non Hethersett Sites
Freda Laycock Memorial Site
Freda Laycock in the mother of a friend. She served as a nursing sister in Sierra Leone and also was one of the first medical staff to liberate a German concentration camp at Sanbostel. I have set-up the site in a scrapbook style to cover the various phases of Freda's life and to act as a memorial to her work.
Alan Mann's Site
Friend and local author Alan Mann writes books on rock n roll. His subjects in the past have included Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley and his latest book is a biography of Tony Sheridan which I had the pleasure of editing. Sheridan was the vocalist on the Beatles' early single My Bonnie which caused quite a stir in their home town of Liverpool. Sheridan came from Norwich and was a life-long friend of Alan's.
Le Paradis Massacre Memorial Site
I am a member of the Le Paradis Commemoration Group set-up to remember the 97 soldiers from the Royal Norfolk, Royal Scots and other Regiments who were murdered by the German SS in a massacre in the hamlet of Le Paradis in Northern France on May 27th, 1940. A few years ago we set-up a website to tell the story of the massacre and also the fighting in the area as British troops attempted to hold up the German advance so that over 300,000 troops could be evacuated off the beach at Dunkirk. An offshoot of that group is currently working towards having a memorial to the 97 erected in Norwich Cathedral Close in Norfolk.
