Unlike other quizzes you won't have to wait until tomorrow for the answer. So drum roll. The answer is the modern Olympic games.
You will be aware that Olympic games always have mascots and you might remember that the mascots for the 2012 London games were Wenlock and Mandeville. They were strange one eyed creatures (I would have preferred a cuddly Teddy bear personally). In fact lots of people found Wenlock rather creepy.
But how did the mascot come about? Well Wenlock was named after Much Wenlock where a competition inspired by the Ancient Greek Olympics and called the Much Wenlock Games were held. When Baron Pierre de Coubertin visited the town for these games, he was inspired to begin the modern Olympic movement.
So we are talking about 1850 here. The Wenlock Olympian Games (or WOGs) were set up by William Penny Brookes and the Wenlock Olympian Society (WOS). In 1861 Brookes set up the Shropshire Games and in 1866 the National Olympian Games (NOGs).
So now things take a strange turn. In 1890 the Raven Hotel was the venue for the annual post WOG dinner and Baron Pierre de Coubertin was the guest of honour. He is known as the founder and father of the modern Olympic games and he loved WOGs so much that he used them as a blueprint for the Olympics.
WOGs is a nine day event staged on eight sites across Shropshire and continues to this day.
Much Wenlock is a delightful small town with many historic buildings including the remains of a priory. A few years ago the Sunday Times voted Much Wenlock one of the best places in the UK to live. Historian Mary Beard was born there and apparently the actress Gabrielle Drake lives there. Now the name Gabrielle Drake may not mean much to most people but she has appeared on television in many different programmes.
She is the brother of the late and much missed Nick Drake and that name may mean something to folk/rock music fans. Nick Drake's musical output was relatively small but he was an immense influence on so many modern songwriters with his rich deep voice and, at times, dark songs.
Tomorrow I will feature some of my photographs of Much Wenlock.
