If you weren't old enough to remember this or if you didn't live in the village, the programme might come as a surprise to you. I was involved in a number of the events as chairman of both Hethersett and the Meltons' Sports Association and Hethersett Athletic Football Club. But I'm pleased to say I managed to enjoy every one of these events which were very varied and resulted in Hethersett being given an award (now in Hethersett Library) for organising more events per head of population than any village, town or city in the United Kingdom. It was the second year of the event and I will dig out details of the first event for tomorrow's blog. I am also looking to put details into the historic section of the Hethersett Herald website in the not too distant future.
The event kicked off with the swimming marathon in the Junior School pool and then on the Friday evening there was a talent show in the village hall which was won by David Wyatt incredibly giving his first ever public performance.
On the Saturday over 500 people pitched up to try their hand at over 20 sports on the Memorial Playing Field from American Football and basketball to cycle speedway and rounders.
An Olympic themed church service on Sunday morning in Hethersett Social Club preceded the two mile round the square funrun (an event that is still going but which has had to be cancelled this year due to the coronavirus).
At the same time a top county-wide ladies football tournament took place on the memorial field. I well remember completing the funrun before going home for a much needed shower ahead of going to the five-a-side competition which was won by a team from Thorpe.
The whole weekend was rounded off with an orchestral concert in Hethersett Parish Church. Below is my brief report of the weekend written at the time. I will have some photos from the weekend in tomorrow's blog. Please let me know if you have any memories of the weekend.
Olympic Weekend - Entertainment for all ages was provided by the second Hethersett Olympic Weekend which ran from July 22nd to 24th. The weekend got off to a marathon start on Friday morning with pupils from Hethersett Junior School swimming 2012 lengths of their school pool. The youngsters started at 8 a.m under the watchful eye of Radio Norfolk presenters Wally Webb and Nicky Price. Nicky also swam eight lengths of the pool.
riday evening saw a packed house at Hethersett Village Hall enjoy Hethersett's Got Talent 2011 with 12 acts vying for the title. Winner was singer guitarist David Wyatt who was appearing on stage in public for the first time. Saturday saw the massive Sport in the Park event.
Sunday saw four events - the inter denominational church service in Hethersett Social Club, the two mile round the square fun run, a ladies five a side football tournament and a Last Night of the Proms concert in St Remigius Church.
