Admittedly yesterday wasn't the hottest day ever, in fact it was a touch chilly, but it certainly didn't warrant Bing Crosby singing White Christmas which was one of the first songs to come up. That just reminded me that there's only 129 days to Christmas!
Certainly the nights are drawing in. That's something I always notice as we approach the end of August. I think that comes from my early days when we always had family holidays the last week in August and first week in September, although I can't remember our holidays being that close to the new year at school.
I always think from the end of September there's a run in towards Christmas that takes us through birthdays (one for me and one for my other threequarters), Halloween, Bonfire night and then Christmas. I bet it won't be long before the shops start their festive displays.

There was an interesting piece in the book I'm reading on the Second World War by Martin Gilbert. It states that when Hitler rode in triumph into Paris after France had capitulated, he ordered the destruction of two statues.
The first was of General Charles Mangin, French hero of the First World War and the second was Edith Cavell - Norfolk's very own First World War heroine. It's good to know that Cavell upset Hitler so much. For those not acquainted with Cavell. She was responsible for helping over 200 Allied soldiers to escape from a Red Cross hospital in German-occupied Belgium. She was executed but her body is buried in the grounds of Norwich Cathedral. It is very poignant and fitting that her memorial is very close to our memorial of the 97 soldiers who died in the massacre in Le Paradis in Northern France in May, 1940.

Apart from reading about the war I'm also currently listening to an audiobook of an autobiography written by England cricketer Jonny Bairstow.
It's a sad listen as his father, who encouraged him in his cricketing pursuits, died at the age of 46 when he took his own life. As a tribute to his father, Jonny wears the number 51 to mark the year in which David Bairstow was born (1951).
