In my defence I have two things. Firstly yesterday I had a new experience. I worked as a poll clerk for the Norfolk County Council elections and Police Commissioner elections. It was a 17 hour working day but one I found very interesting and, in a strange way, enjoyable.
There were moments of fun mainly surrounding the pratfalls of the presiding officer Kerry who firstly fell over some chairs and then knocked over a cup of tea. Now I know we shouldn't laugh at people's misfortunes but I did promise Kerry I would mention them in the blog.
Living in Hethersett helped with my task at the Village Hall as I was conversant with all the roads in the village and sometimes hearing what people said whilst wearing masks was difficult. It was also so nice to see so many people I knew. Some recognised me behind a table, a shield and a mask but others didn't. I saw a number of readers of this blog during the day.
In addition, I saw one of my old teachers from when I was at the Norwich School. I tried to work out his age, using mine as a basis and he must be late eighties, early nineties. He searched his mind but couldn't remember me which wasn't surprising taking into account the thousands of pupils he would have taught during his career and I was scarcely a child prodigy.
We were very busy with a steady stream of voters passing throughout the day with the first arriving on the dot of 7 am and the last coming in about 15 minutes before the close at 9.45 pm.
I missed my usual Thursday tennis session but didn't. It was called off by the rain.
Today I got up early to be the first in the queue for my second COVID vaccine. Actually there wasn't a queue. I was supposed to have the jab yesterday but got the date changed and found when I rolled up this morning that I was down twice! Thankfully it didn't mean I had to have two shots in the arm.
Blog reader Phillipa Bond, landlady of the Queen's Head, was there to sort it all out in her usual calm manner. Phillipa has done so much to support the community during lockdown through the Hethersett Hearts Support Group and much more.
After the injection I had to wait in a room for 15 minutes before driving home. I listened in to a conversation amongst others in the room who were talking about near misses on Thickthorn Roundabout. Don't get me started on Norfolk roundabouts and roads. Let's just leave it with the comment that the whole Thickthorn interchange needs re-designing (well actually that is going to happen). The Northern Distributor Road or whatever it's now called is also hugely dangerous and stupidly designed.
Now I'm off for a walk before tiredness from yesterday and any reaction from the vaccine kicks in.
