"You don't look homeless," said the lady in the cafe.
"We aren't," we replied feeling somewhat confused.
"But didn't we see you coming out of the homeless hostel just now over the road," she added.
"We went into the hotel to see if they did coffee but they weren't particularly helpful," said She Who Must be Obeyed (also known as my other threequarters).
"It's been a hostel for the homeless since lockdown," the lady added.
We were in The Bridge cafe/tea shop in Datchet just a couple of miles from Windsor where we were staying for a couple of nights.
Once we had established that we weren't actually homeless, although I suppose technically when you are on holiday you are homeless for a short while, we enjoyed a cafetiere of coffee which gave us over two cups each and two teacakes for £3.50 and a chat with some locals. It felt as if we had gone back about 30 years.
It was our only stop but it took us over three hours of driving to get to Windsor. I thought the going was too easy as we racked up over 50 miles in the first hour and then got stuck at various times on the A14 and then the hideous M25 for roadworks. I can't remember the last time I went over 50 miles and didn't get stuck in a jam of some kind (be it strawberry or raspberry). That reminds me of the old joke.
There has been a report today of an accident between a lorry carrying strawberries and a lorry carrying raspberries. Police have warned motorists to expect traffic jams (boom boom).
The amount of traffic on our roads does concern me. It's bad now but how much worse will it be when all these thousands and thousands of new homes throughout the country are inhabited? Our roads cannot cope with the current levels and that's with thousands working from home. Will it get even worse when lockdown rules are further relaxed?
We noticed the Queen was in residence in Windsor Castle but we had to eat and drink at the Boatman which claimed to be the only waterside pub in Windsor. We had to do that because I had obviously mislaid my invite to dine at the Castle. I wonder if the Queen ever has trouble sleeping due to the noise from planes taking off and landing at Heathrow.
Managed a walk along the riverside and I hope you enjoy the photos which include one of the massive vegetarian sharing platter we had at The Boatman.
