Never thought he was a great actor but he was Illya in The Man From Uncle which stands as we all know for United Network Command For Law and Enforcement. I wonder if they decided on the name first and realised the initials made the word UNCLE. Or did they start with UNCLE and then think up the words from there? Who knows. I'm sure somebody will.
I can never see McCallum without thinking of his appalling appearance on Juke Box Jury - one of the few clips you can get of the programme on You Tube.
He was on with his then wife Jill Ireland. As most of you will know, the idea of Juke Box Jury was that a panel of so called celebrities sat in judgement on the latest pop discs. They made comments about them and then voted whether the disc was going to be a hit or a miss. There were usually four panellists so often there could be two votes for a hit and two for a miss. Then I believe the audience made the decision.
David McCallum and Jill Ireland spoke with terribly clipped posh accents and obviously had no idea what they were talking about and looked completely bored by the whole process. If you don't believe me just search for it on You Tube. You will be gobsmacked at the crassness of the whole thing.
It's a short clip and you won't believe what McCallum and Ireland were commenting on - yes it was the future of rock n roll Pinky and Perks, the loveable (!!!????) puppet pigs.
Ireland declared it "charming" whilst McCallum said that he loved animals and these pigs had plenty of charm. They voted it a unanimous hit. What a load of old tosh.
There was another clip of McCallum on TV which looked like it was taken at an airport. There were hundreds of screaming girls reminding me of those strange days when youngsters would swoon at film and pop stars and the world was just readying itself for The Beatles and the like.

I often have a go at and mention bad service. So it's nice to mention the opposite. What a lovely two night stay we had at the Rose and Crown in Thurstonland near Huddersfield.
It was like living for two days in a local. It was in fact living for two days in a local.
We were looked after really well and the food was good and plentiful. Our room was very comfortable and the landlord was so friendly.
On Monday evening he even asked us about how we felt customers should be given a menu. He had three ideas- left in a folder on the table or given to you as you sit down or supplied in a posh menu folder. My view was for the informal but I did add that more important was being acknowledged by staff and being treated like a valued customer - something this pub did really well. I wouldn't hesitate in staying there again if I was in the area and can really recommend it.
Must mention a small place we passed through which caused me to titter. It was called Netherthong. Almost makes the eyes water thinking about the name.
