As time goes by you lose count of ages.
The other day I was watching television and saw somebody who looked suspiciously like Wendy Craig but much older.
I took a closer look and it still looked a lot like Wendy Craig who used to appear in pretty much every sit com available apart from Only Fools and Horses which of course had David Jason who must now also be ancient.
And what about Petula Clarke? The other threequarters went with a friend who is a friend's other half and swears blind Petula Clark was the bird lady in the West End version of Mary Popup - sorry Mary Poppins. But it couldn't be surely. But some research showed it was.
And how old is Katie Boyle - the posh lady who used to front Eurovision?
So I hit Google and found out that Wendy Craig is still working at the age of 89. Petula Clark still goes Downtown and is already 90. David Jason is 83 and sadly Katie Boyle left us in 2018 at the age of 91.
It is said that age is only a number. Is it hell. The old joints and bones start to ache, particularly when it's damp and wet and my Achilles permanently hurts when I walk thanks to two much pounding on concrete tennis courts.
It takes me a while to get going but I'm still pretty fit and have just set myself a target of losing half a stone in weight between now and the end of the year. That means getting to know Mr Salad again.
I will keep you informed on my progress, although if I don't succeed I will probably forget that I ever wrote this blog.
Now all I have to do is avoid Saturday night television featuring Casualty where all these "old" actors and actresses turn up.
Just one last thought on age. When I worked for the police most officers called it a day after 30 years. That was when their pensions were at the optimum level. Today it's slightly different but it still makes David Jason far too old when he played Detective Inspector Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost and don't get me started on Brenda Blethyn as detective Vera Stanhope. She is still playing the part despite being 77 years of age which means she is likely to have been in Northumberland Police for the best part of 57 years!
