Well I certainly was amazed. Amazed at the fact that our Friends of Hethersett Library's quiz on Saturday attracted 15 tables and a full hall and raised over £600.
I had a Likely Lads moment. I have mentioned this episode of the old days sit com before where the two guys Bob and Terry spend the whole day avoiding finding out a football score so they can watch the game on Match of the Day. They go to great lengths not to find out the score before settling down to watch the game only to find out it was postponed and they have wasted a whole day trying to avoid something that didn't exist in the first place.
Well at the end of the quiz it behove (that's a good word I have probably never used before) me to give the vote of thanks and tell everyone about the Friends' Group.
I might come over as pretty confident in doing this but I assure you I'm far from sure of anything I say. But I thought I would start off by giving the latest score in the Rugby World Cup Final which at the time had South Africa narrowly ahead of New Zealand. I was just about to give the score when there were shouts from around the room. People had recorded the game and didn't want to know the score.
It was a lovely evening. The hall was full with 15 tables and that was at least a 50 percent increase on our previous quiz. We are already planning next year's. Amazingly virtually all our advertising for the event was through social media and word of mouth. Some of the money will be used for a Christmas party for local children. It will also help us to organise regular events throughout next year.

Yesterday I had a look through the photographs I published from our visit to Colchester Zoo. A lot were of models rather than real animals and at times it was difficult to tell the difference. The first photo was of a giraffe which indeed was a model. It slightly perturbs me that the zoo may have been covering up for a lack of real animals by substituting realistic models.

And so to St Remigius. My friend John has sent me details of where you can find churches dedicated to St Remigius in Britain.
There are just six of them, of which four are in Norfolk - in Hethersett, Dunston, Roydon near Diss and Seething near London. Outside Norfolk there are examples at Long Clawson in Leicestershire and Water Newton near Peterborough.
But for me the most intriguing is a fragment of a tower of St Remigius Church at Testerton.
Testerton is a parish that was abandoned in 1935 when the land and the parish of Pudding Norton near Fakenham was extended.
At the beginning of the 17th century the church had only 18 communicants. By the end of the century the church was already partially ruined and the walls were eventually removed.
Today all that remains is the western part of the west tower. The tower dates to the late 14th or 15th century although it is thought the rest of the church goes back to the 11th or 12th century.

Sad to hear that American actor Matthew Perry has died. He was found by police dead in a hot tub. There is some suggestion that he suffered a heart attack
As a rule I don't greatly like American sit coms. One big exception is Friends where the interaction of the main characters is brilliant and some of the episodes were wonderfully funny.
Perry as Chandler Bing not only had a silly name but also had wonderful comedy timing, particularly when paired with Matt Le Blanc as Joey.

One final thought on the rugby. If I was a New Zealander I would feel rather upset that my team didn't beat South Africa. They scored the only try of the game and twice elected to kick for touch rather than kick for goal. In addition they missed a very kickable penalty and conversion and were by far the better team.
South Africa somehow managed to win the quarter final, semi final and final all by one point. Talk about riding your luck
