I'm envious of people who get into a car and love cruising around. I don't.
And don't get me started on sat nav. OK do get me started on sat nav. I have on two occasions recently followed it in an attempt to get out of York and ended up going round and round in circles.
At one point it read 11 miles to our destination. After driving around and following it for 15 minutes it read 12 miles to go.
Our Sat Nav seems to have a mind of its own.
After breakfast in Askrigg we set off to see friends in York. Drove to the top of the Yorkshire Dales for some spectacular views. I annoyed the other threequarters by saying I preferred the flat of Norfolk. I think she thinks I'm a Philistine.
Thankfully we didn't meet anything coming the other way thus proving you can still get away from it all.
We eventually reached the market town of Leyburn. It wasn't market day so the market area was a giant car park. I have to say that Leyburn is one of the least interesting towns I have visited. It doesn't have a lot going for it, although the views from an area known as The Shawl were good. We found a town map that told us to get to this area we needed to cross the road close to the HSB Bank. Of course this bank no longer exists.
One of the highlights of the day was a visit to Tennant's auction rooms just outside the town. There we had coffee and watched some of the auction of musical instruments and hundreds of LPs that seemed to make about £6 each although they were sold in large bundles.
Inside the actual auction room there was only a small sprinkling of people. Most of the business was done online. Surely that means that the days of bagging a bargain in person have gone. Now you are up against the world.
We left an hour to get from Layburn to York. It took an hour and a half. After lunch with our friends we had a walk in the museum gardens and then tried to get out of the city amongst heavy traffic.
Our next two night stay is in the middle of the countryside at a hotel that used to belong to Yorkshire Water.
Today's photos are of The Dales, Leyburn and York.
It's obscene - Shell have announced record profits for 2022 of £32.2 billion. All this when energy prices are continuing to rise and so many people are struggling to make ends meet. Surely something needs to be done, but I bet it won't. That figure is just mind boggling. A billion is one million million and there are 32 of those. Yes I know all the guff that only 5% of Shell's work is in the UK and they pay a lot of tax but that doesn't help with my thoughts.
It's obscene 2 - People who have been bullied at work will recognise what is going on with the allegations against Dominic Raab. There is no worse feeling than having to go somewhere every day where you are subjected to bullying. I have first hand experience of bullying at work and it's a thoroughly miserable thing.
It's amusing 1 - The place we stayed in Askrigg was the hotel featured in the original version of All Creatures Great and Small where it was known as The Drovers' Arms. It's actually The King's Arms. It was built by John Pratt who also built stables next to it for horseracing. Pratt was a top jockey who was born in Askrigg and made his fortune riding in Newmarket. One of the signs in the hotel read "Down to Pratts." I meant to take a photo of it but when I tried I found I didn't have a card in my camera. Perhaps Mr Pratt didn't want me to take the Michael out of his name.
It's amusing 2- The name of the newsreader on Yorkshire television is Clare Frisby. No jokes please.
It's amusing 3. The singing of Delilah has been banned by Welsh rugby as the song is about an abusive relationship and a stabbing. Not sure how they will stop 60,000 fans if they fancy singing it. On the news they kept referring to it as Tom Jones' song. Yes Jones sings it but it's written by Barry Mason and Les Reed who wrote numerous other hit songs including Jones' It's not unusual which reminds me of a joke.
A man goes to see a doctor
"Doctor. I keep thinking I'm Tom Jones"
"Don't worry old chap it's not unusual."
Enough for today. Enjoy the photos
