After over 50 miles of walking over 24 hours, Kim Rout and friend Lois Ware completed their marathon effort and raised an astonishing £2700 for relief work in Ukraine.
The thing that impressed me was their comments about how they had been treated on their walk. They met with nothing other than support, kindness and generosity. One motorist went looking for them and drove round until he found them and presented £40. I witnessed a couple of chaps in a van slip £20 into the collecting tin.
Tonight I, along with about 60 others, joined Kim and Lois for the last hour of their walk. At one point we were passed by a car who had his hand on his horn all the way down the road. This wasn't an act of aggression but one of support as the driver realised who we were.
Kim and Lois admit that it had been tough but they had been determined to keep going. They were helped on the way by "having a good laugh to keep the spirits up." You might think that the middle of the night might have seen them at their lowest ebb but for them yesterday afternoon was the worst time. Then they hit a physical and mental brick wall that they managed to break down.
Walking with them over the past couple of days has helped to put my own walking challenge well on track. As you know I'm attempting to walk 1,500 miles in 2022 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. I am currently well on track to complete the task in early December, but I'm going to keep going to see by how many miles I can exceed my target by. I think what I'm doing pales into insignificance when put alongside what the two ladies have achieved.
As well as the walking, we paid a fleeting visit to North Norfolk yesterday to enjoy the sunshine and there are a handful of pictures from there.
Overall it was a very good weekend apart from Norwich getting beaten, but the less said about that the better.
