Not because she is Australian, not because she seems to be a genuinely nice person, not because she's currently the best player in the world. No I'm glad because she is small.
When I say she is small I mean she is small in tennis terms. If you follow tennis you will be aware that over the past few years lady tennis players have become taller and taller - particularly those from Eastern Europe.
Many are over 6 ft. So Ash Barty at 5ft 5in is a throwback to the days when size didn't matter. Her opponent in yesterday's final was 6ft 2in. Being someone who loves playing tennis and who is well let's say vertically challenged, I am so pleased to know that smaller people can still be the best at the sport.
So why are in general tall players better at tennis? Well it's pretty obvious really. They have a bigger reach which makes them harder to pass at the net. It also makes it very difficult to lob them. One of my problems has always been going up to the net and seeing the ball sail over my head to the back of the court.
I was brought up in the days when you served and volleyed. That meant serving and rushing into the net in order to make your next shot a volley. Now most play is strictly back of the court. I have adapted my game to do that but it doesn't have the thrill of the crash bang tennis of the past.
Anyway it's good to see somebody of 5ft 5in proving that size comes second to ability, although I can't see a 5ft 5in man winning Wimbledon.

I can't quite get my head around the fact that with virus figures going up we are about to seriously relax restrictions. The R rate which last year was trotted out as a reason for lockdown became a measure of how fast the virus was spreading. The Government and medical services tried desperately to keep it below one. Now in parts of the country it's approaching two.
A year ago as cases rose we had more and more stringent lockdown inflicted on us. Now as cases rise we are about to relax restrictions. It doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not saying I'm against relaxation but it does seem to be rather illogical. Ultimately I do agree that we have to learn to live with the virus. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next month or so.

Omitted to give a date yesterday to my photograph of Donald Boore. It was taken in the Earlham Salon in Norwich on 19th October 1966. The young men having his haircut will now be in his mid sixties.

Went on a Steward Stroll in Norwich yesterday. Hope you enjoy a few of the photographs I took most of which were around the Forum where they had some very colourful sales items on display and London Street.
