Suffolk May 1991
Day One - May 25th, 1991
Not too long a drive to get to our latest holiday destination. It took under one hour to reach our first stop - Bury St Edmunds.
Had a game of putting, lunch in the tea rooms and visited the history museum before getting some groceries for the week.
The drive to the cottage was a short one and we arrived a few minutes ahead of Dave and Rosemary and Peter and Joan. Our cottages were extremely pleasant - converted cow sheds! After unpacking we played some games before the boys went to bed. Several of the grown-ups went to the local pub for the evening.
Day Two - May 26th
After getting up early we set off for Lavenham after breakfast. It was only two miles away and is a very picturesque village. After a quick look round we took the rather long and winding road to Aldeburgh. Had a wander round and a fish and chip lunch and spent much of the afternoon on the beach.
Took a round-a-bout way back to the cottage, stopping off at Framlingham and had tea at a very attractive Methodist Church flower show. Drove back to the cottage via Lavenham and after tea spent the evening playing cards.
Day Three - May 27th
After breakfast, drove to Lavenham for another look round. Today was a Bank Holiday. Went to a craft fair and left the village at about midday. Next stop was Long Melford where there was a considerable amount of traffic. Had lunch in an hotel - pretty average. Then had a long walk and look round the church before returning to the car.
After tea at the cottage we spent the evening playing cards.
Day Four - May 28th
A day in Constable Country. Drove to Flatford which was only 20 miles away. Set off on a circular tour of the fields and after half an hour reached Dedham and had lunch there in a pub.
Continued on our walk and then in the car had a circular tour on the way back to the cottage. Stopped at the rather uninspiring town of Hadleigh and then on to Kersey which was much prettier. Had a good look round the pottery and bought a number of things.
On arriving back at the cottage we found Mary and David paying a flying visit. After tea we all played football and cricket. When the children had gone to bed some of the adults went to the Swan at Lavenham for a drink.
Day Five - May 29th
After breakfast drove to Bury St Edmunds for Market Day and the place was awash with people. Did some shopping, had a look round the cattle market and a walk and then drove to West Stow for a picnic lunch and play on the playground. Some went to the Saxon village while others just went for a walk. The outing ended with cricket and football.
Returned to the cottage for tea and then spent the evening watching a rather dull European Football final on television.
Day Six - May 30th
Went to Sudbury in the morning. Some swam in the leisure pool, others watched. Had lunch in a rather nice pub before having a look round the town before driving to another very picturesque village - Cavendish. We had a tour of the vineyards which was entertaining because of a very eccentric guide.
From there we went to Clare and found a park to play cricket. It was a late night all round by the time we had finished tea and enjoyed the evening.
Day Seven - May 31st
During the morning we went on a long walk around Lavenham and came across the Milk Race on a minor road. Stayed in Lavenham for morning coffee and light lunch before going on to Melford Hall, only to find it closed. So went back to Clare for another game of cricket. Stopped at the Sue Ryder Foundation Museum and tea rooms for afternoon tea.
Had a tour of the countryside before returning to the cottage and visiting another pub in the evening.
Day Eight - June 1st
Returned home via Bury St Edmunds for a final look round and some shopping. On the way home had lunch at the Little Chef at Attleborough.
