But as they say on Dad's Army "Don't panic Mr Manwaring." I quickly realised it would have been coming from the new police training area at the former Old Hall School and so it turned out when Norfolk Police put the following on Facebook:
"We have had calls in to our control room today from concerned residents in Hethersett around noise issues. We can confirm that officers were at Hethersett Old Hall site for a training exercise today and we apologise for any noise/disruption this might have caused."
I guess this is something we will need to get used to. It will be ok as long as we don't think it's the Gunfight at the OK Corral across the B1172!
The latest edition of Hethersett Herald is out today. If you are new to the publication please give it a look by clicking on the link https://hethersettherald.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/9/3/11930148/villagemagjuly2020.pdf.
I was looking to put the edition online early morning but delayed it to check out a couple of things and it was a good job I did as a visit to the village gave me updates on a number of things.
Firstly I grabbed a takeaway coffee at Café Kin and they will be placing a few chairs and tables out the front of Rowan House from Saturday and also serving food on Fridays and Saturdays from July 4th (which is aptly Independence Day - but only in the USA).
Then I was lucky enough to have a look at the new set-up at the Queen's Head which will also be re-opening on Saturday and introducing a one-way system - in through one door and out through another. Orders will be taken at tables and a new gazebo has allowed the pub to make an extensive outside area that can take more than 40 people while still observing the social distancing criteria.
It will be so good to have the Queen's active again and a real boost to the idea of "returning to some kind of normality."
The news about the King's Head is not so good. There have been some optimistic signs over the past couple of days with the outside being decorated. But I understand from a reliable source that this is little more than window dressing. Apparently the expected tenants Norfolk Table have pulled out and we seem to be back to square one.
The current spruce up is being undertaken by the owners Ei and I guess it's an attempt to find new landlords - after all who would be interested in taking on a pub in the current state of the King's. And it's certainly not a good advert for Ei either.
